The African Cup of Nations Champions, Teranga Lions of Senegal started the defense of the title in a grand style, wallopping hapless Gambia by 3--0.
The Gambian national team that had gone through ordeal in the build up to the tournament, having flight challenge, due to technical hitch, had to make a return after being air borne for nine minutes, as if that was not enough, the players boycotted training session over unpaid qualification bonus.
The unlucky Gambian conceded the first goal as early as in the 4th minute when Pape Gueye lashed home an assist by Sadio Mane to give the Teranga Lions their first goal of the tournament.
However, before the break, Gambia suffered another blow with Ebou Adams being red carded.
Early in the second half, the 20 year old and African young footballer of the year, Lamine Camara sent a low shot to the far corner of the net to register the second goal for Senegal.
Aliou Cisse's Senegal will now meet the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun in a match tagged, " Fight of The Lions"
At Yamoussoukuo, the 2017 champions, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun, came from behind to draw 1--1 with 10-man Guinea in the second game of the day.
Guinea had taken early lead through Mohammed Bayo while Frank Magri equalized for the Indomitable Lions in the second half.
In Bouake, the 2019 champions, Algeria ended their encounter with Angola in a score draw, therefore, joining other major nations, Nigeria, Cameroun, Egypt and Ghana that had failed to win their opening games.
In the 18th minute, Baghdad Bournedjah registered the first goal of the encounter but had a goal disallowed for an offside call soon after he registered the 1st goal for Algeria.
However, Angola restored parity in the game through a Mabululu's penalty mid-way in the second half.
