The celebration of Ogun State at 50 resonated strongly at the grassroots on Friday, 6 February 2026, as the Executive Chairman of Ogun Waterside Local Government, Abigi, Hon. Odunnoiki, joined His Excellency, Prince (Dr.) Dapo Abiodun, CON, the Executive Governor of Ogun State, and citizens across the state in commemorating the Golden Jubilee amidst pomp and fanfare.
The Ogun Waterside Local Government Secretariat, Abigi, was a beehive of activities as residents trooped out in large numbers to celebrate the historic milestone of the state’s creation.
The event featured cultural displays, goodwill messages, empowerment programmes, and wide participation by stakeholders across the local government.
According to him, “Today is a remarkable day in the history of Ogun Waterside Local Government in particular and Ogun State at large.
The creation of Ogun State from the old Western State on February 3, 1976, led to the merger of Ijebu Waterside District Council and Osunmayegun District Council into Ijebu East Local Government with headquarters at Ogbere.
By divine providence, Ogun Waterside Local Government was later created on May 15, 1989, a development that has brought significant progress and advancement to our people.”
The council chairman congratulated Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he described as outstanding leadership, noting that the governor has surpassed previous records through massive infrastructural development, economic transformation, and inclusive governance at the grassroots within six and a half years in office.
He praised the governor’s achievements, including the construction of the Gateway International Airport, Iperu, the recent approval for a Deep Sea Port at Olokola in Ogun Waterside Local Government, and the Federal Government’s approval for oil well drilling in Eba , Ogun Waterside Local Government, which has positioned Ogun State among oil-producing states in Nigeria.
“Your milestone achievements, including projects initiated and those inherited but completed under your watch, are worthy of emulation. You have transformed Ogun State into an industrial hub of the nation through meaningful and laudable projects. We are proud to be associated with your wonderful achievements. Indeed, you are truly God-sent to Ogun State,” he added.
Prominent personalities within the council area, including the Ojotumoro of Abigi, HRM Oba Olusegun Ogunye, Asiwaju Dele Odunlana, Hon. Balogun Akeem, former Deputy Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, and Hon. Lawal Shamsideen Adekunle, representing Ogun Waterside Constituency at the State House of Assembly, also felicitated with the state and its people on the Golden Jubilee celebration.
They commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving oil drilling activities in the local government area and appreciated Governor Abiodun for his unwavering support and developmental strides in Ogun Waterside.
The high point of the celebration was the distribution of empowerment items and cash gifts to residents in commemoration of Ogun State’s Golden Jubilee.
In a related development, Hon. Odunnoiki also joined the Ogun State Government, fellow local government chairmen, and citizens at the culinary and cultural exhibition held at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, as part of the 50th-anniversary celebration. The exhibition provided an opportunity for all local governments to showcase their economic potentials and prospects to a global audience.
The council chairman concluded by offering prayers for greater unity, peace, progress, tranquillity, and prosperity for Ogun State as it continues to thrive among the comity of states in Nigeria.
Ogun State was created alongside Oyo and Ondo States on February 3, 1976, and has since witnessed remarkable growth and transformation across all sectors.
The event was well attended by the Vice Chairman, Alhaja Ogunlana Olabode (Chairman, Planning Committee), Leader of the House, Hon. Ajayi Felix, other councillors, Secretary to the Local Government, Alhaji Okuwoga Nojeemdeen Adeyinka, party leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, market men and women, union leaders, career officers, school students, members of the press, and other stakeholders.
