Super Eagles So Super Against Indomitable Lions As Ademola Lookman's Brace Send Five-Time Champions Out Of 2023 AFCON
BY Olopade Sakiru
It was a wild jubilation for Nigerians last night as the Super Eagles took their arch-rivals, the Indomitable Lions to the cleaners with an emphatic two nill victory to qualify for the quarter-final of the ongoing AFCON in Ivory Coast.
The Jose Peseiro men outplayed their counterparts in all the departments of the game with the rock-solid defense of the Super Eagles, providing excellent coverage for the cool and calm, netminder, Stanley Nwabali.
The CAF Man Of the Match, the Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock in the 36th minute after Victor Osimhen had brushed aside the Cameroonian defender to send a tailored pass to Lookman to register the first goal after the VAR had earlier ruled out a goal by Semi Ajayi for offside.
The encounter lived up to its billing as both countries tried to outwit each other. However, the goal that broke the camel's back was recorded in the 90th minute as Alex Iwobi fed Calvin Bassey whose telegraphic cross found the unmarked Lookman Ademola to beat Ondoa to seal victory for Nigeria in a fashionable way.
Both countries, Nigeria and Cameroon have met 25 times in all competitions and total of 8 times in the AFCON, with Nigeria winning 4 times, while Cameroon won 3 times and a draw.
Meanwhile, after the victory against Cameroon, Nigerians major concern now is the injury sustained by goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali who was strechered off after a collision with George Kevin Nkoudou who was booked for reckless challenge on the Nigerian goalie.
