The Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, led by its Chairman, Ms. Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo, on Wednesday, 5th November 2025, paid an official working visit to Abeokuta North Local Government, reaffirming its dedication to efficient service delivery and workforce welfare at the grassroots.
They were received amid drums, music, and a colourful guard of honour by the enthusiastic staff of the council, led by the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Mrs. Kikelomo Munirat Ajayi, alongside all Heads of Departments.
The delegation’s activities commenced at the Conference Hall, where they met with the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Dr.) Lanre Oyegbola Sodipo, and other political functionaries. This was followed by an interactive session with Holga and Heads of Departments and culminated in a grand meeting at the Local Government Multipurpose Hall, which drew the full complement of the council’s staff.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Ajayi Kikelomo ,expressed appreciation to the Commission for its support and reiterated the council’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and efficient service delivery.
The Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olanike Olawunmi Ogunbona, FNSE, in her brief remarks, urged staff to uphold professionalism, respect, and discipline, reminding them of their responsibilities as public servants.
Speaking on behalf of the staff, Comrade Abiodun Ogunsiji, Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), presented three major concerns to the Commission:
1. Shortage of staff in certain junior cadres.
2. Delay in the payment of pensions and gratuities.
3. Appeal for considerate handling of staff transfers and postings, especially for those seeking retention within the local government.
Responding, Ms Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo, commended Hon. (Dr.) Sodipo for the facelift given to the council secretariat and for maintaining a conducive work environment. She acknowledged the current financial constraints limiting large-scale recruitment but assured that the Commission would act promptly once government approval is granted.
On staff transfers, the Chairman emphasized that postings are integral to the civil service system, ensuring fairness, exposure, and balanced workforce distribution across local governments.
Providing clarity on the pension matter, the Permanent Secretary explained that Ogun State officially commenced its new pension scheme on 1st July 2025, with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) already signed between the government and union leaders to guarantee smooth implementation and timely payment of entitlements.
She expressed optimism that results of this new arrangement would soon be evident.
The well-attended event featured the Executive and Legislative Council members, management staff, and the entire workforce of Abeokuta North Local Government. The visit not only strengthened the synergy between the Commission and the council workforce but also served as a platform for evaluation, guidance, and motivation.
