The Management of Abeokuta North Local Government hereby issues a strong and urgent warning to traders, residents, and members of the general public engaging in the unlawful display of wares on pedestrian walkways within the Local Government area. This unacceptable practice continues to obstruct the free and safe movement of people, forcing pedestrians—including children and the elderly—to walk on the roadside and expose themselves to avoidable danger.
The Local Government notes with deep concern that several major walkways designed to ensure smooth human traffic flow have been taken over by traders and hawkers who deliberately ignore the rules governing the use of public spaces. Such irresponsible conduct not only disrupts orderliness but also threatens public safety and undermines the urban environmental standards the Local Government is striving to maintain.
In addition to walkway obstruction, the Management has also observed the persistent neglect and abuse of drainage channels across the Local Government. Many residents have formed the habit of dumping waste into both covered and uncovered drains, thereby contributing massively to blockage, flooding, foul odour, and general environmental degradation. This unpatriotic behaviour continues to place unnecessary pressure on the Local Government’s resources and compromises the collective wellbeing of the community.
It must be clearly stated that drainage channels exist to allow free passage of stormwater and prevent flooding. When these channels are carelessly clogged with refuse, used sachet water bags, food remnants, and other waste, the consequences affect everyone. The Local Government therefore calls on all residents, shop owners, and business operators to ensure regular cleaning and proper maintenance of drainage channels in front of their premises.
Similarly, open drainage channels must not be covered either by concrete, metal structures or wooden construction. This is in total disregard to environmental issue and public safety.
In line with its mandate to uphold environmental order, safeguard lives, and maintain infrastructural integrity, the Abeokuta North Localub Government will not fold its arms while a few individuals continue to violate public regulations. Necessary measures will henceforth be taken to curb these infractions and restore sanity to affected areas.
The Management wishes to notify the general public that a fully empowered Environmental Task Force will soon be deployed across the Local Government to enforce total compliance with environmental and public space regulations. The Task Force will ensure that walkways are cleared, drainage channels are properly maintained, and all violators are apprehended without exception.
Members of the public are therefore strongly advised to comply immediately and voluntarily. Offenders will be penalized in accordance with the existing laws governing environmental sanitation and in obstruction of public spaces. ignorance of these regulations shall not serve as an excuse once full enforcement begins.
The Abeokuta North Local Government appeals for cooperation from all residents in the collective interest of safety, cleanliness, and orderly public conduct. Together, we can build a healthier, safer, and more organized environment for everyone.
