 By Olopade Sakiru

The Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr . Otunba Fasua Abayomi Johnson (FAJ)has paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Ewekoro Local Government,  Hon Adesina Sikiru Adisa, as part of preparations for the forthcoming national population and housing census.
Speaking during the visit, the Honourable  Federal Commissioner, emphasized the need for the Local Government to give priority to population growth issues by sensitizing stakeholders across communities.

He warned against patronizing agents who fraudulently register births and deaths, stressing such fake records undermine the integrity of the national data and may distort census outcomes.

He also corroborated  the State Director's advice that it is important to set up a mini committee that will be headed by the Comptroller NPC, Ewekoro Local Government, for the smooth operation before, during and after the census period.
Speaking earlier, the State Director of NPC,  Dr. Adenuga Olayinka addressed the popular misconception that the NPC’s sole responsibility is to count the population.

He explained that the Commission also plays a critical role in civil registration, particularly births and deaths, which are fundamental to achieving credible census figures
The Director clarified that the issuance of a birth certificate applies strictly to persons aged 0–17, while individuals above 17 years are entitled to an attestation letter, which carries the same legal value and usefulness.

He further advised the Chairman on the importance of generating accurate population figures for the Local Government, noting that in the near future, Federal Government allocations will be tied to verified population data. To this end, he recommended the establishment of a mini-committee at the local level to facilitate smooth operations during the census exercise.
Responding, the Ewekoro Local Government Chairman, Hon. Adesina Sikiru Adisa, expressed appreciation to the NPC delegation for the timely visit and for sensitizing him on the need, importance, and benefits of an accurate census.
He assured the Commission that the recommended mini-committee would be set up promptly to work hand-in-hand with NPC staff in the Local Government towards the success of the exercise.
