By Olopade Sakiru
The Super Eagles have qualified for the semi-finals of the ongoing AFCON with a titillating performance against the Stable Antelopes of Angola with a lone goal victory at Stade Felix Houphouet Biogny in Abidjan.
It was a hard-fought victory for Nigeria as the Angola started the encounter on a high spirit, forcing goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali to make daring saves in the early part of the game, especially in the 4th minute with Mabululu's close range volley.
Thereafter, the game became an end-to-end stuff. However, it was Nigeria that broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Sanusi knocked down the ball to Simon who managed to escape sliding challenge of Kialenda Gaspar to find Ademola Lookman in the box who made no mistake in blasting the ball into the roof of the net for the only goal.
At the resumption of the second half, the Stable Antelopes changed their formation to 4-4-2, in order to go all out on attacking spree but the Super Eagles put up another solid defensive performance to prevent any danger.
The duo of Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi put up a spirited fight in the mid-field, contesting for every ball and spraying lovely passes.
What could have the second goal by Victor Osimhen was ruled out for offside by VAR.
The Angolans turned the heat on the Super Eagles at the tail end of the game, desperately searching for an equalizer, with Jose Peseiro deploying more men to fortify the defense and to keep at bay the ravaging and hungry attackers of Stable Antelopes.
The Super Eagles will square it up against the winner of Cape Verde and South Africa in the semi finals.
