…Chairman Onabanjo urges retirees to plan wisely, live healthily.
The Ogun State Local Government Service Commission has organized a one-day pre-retirement seminar for officers retiring from the local government system between January and December 2026, aimed at equipping them for a purposeful and healthy life after service.
Declaring the workshop open, the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Ms. Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo, emphasized that financial independence in retirement is not determined solely by one’s earnings during active service, but by the vision exercised in saving, investing, and planning thereafter.
According to her, retirees must prioritize both financial prudence and healthy living to enjoy a vibrant post-service life.
“To enjoy a fulfilling retirement, you must maintain a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and natural foods,” she advised.
She also urged participants to engage in regular physical activities, ensure adequate sleep and manage stress effectively. “Indeed, a healthy retiree is truly a wealthy retiree,” she remarked.
Ms. Onabanjo further encouraged the participants to see retirement as an opportunity to contribute positively to society. “The wealth of experience, knowledge, and skills acquired over the years of public service should be allowed to dissipate for the benefit of others” she said,
while urging them to approach retirement with optimism and diligence.
“On behalf of the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, I extend heartfelt gratitude for your years of unwavering service. May your retirement be marked by robust health, financial stability, peace of mind, and enduring fulfillment,” she concluded.
Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, Engr Olanike Olawunmi Ogunbona, FNSE, welcomed the participants and explained that the seminar was organized to help them start preparing in earnest for life after service. She noted that the Commission engaged experienced retirees to share practical insights on achieving a worthy and healthy retirement.
Engr Ogunbona however, cautioned against the misuse of government property, expressing displeasure at reports of some former officers using official number plates after leaving service.
“Don’t go with official number plates when you are retiring. The Commission will no longer condone such attitude,” she warned.
Mr Adebowale Oyebola Oyeneye,mni, Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Public Service Reform, Office of the Head of Service, Ogun State, the first resource person at the training workshop who delivered paper on “FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN RETIREMENT“ stressed the importance of assessing retirement benefits and creating a retirement budget and saving plan, to ensure financial stability while highlighting proper procedures on life after retirement.
Delivering the second lecture, titled “HEALTHY LIVING FOR RETIRED GOVERNMENT OFFICERS“, Dr. Atinuke Duze, the Medical Officer Of Health, Abeokuta South Local Government Health Authority, underscored the need of every individual to promote, manage health and avoid illness after retirement, thus advised them, to ensure good hygiene before and after retirement.
In his vote of thanks on behalf of the participants, Mr. Ayinla Sulaiman, the Head of Local Government Administration, Ijebu-Ode Local Government, appreciated the Commission for organizing the seminar despite its busy schedule and pulsity of funds. He commended the initiative as a thoughtful and timely gesture, assuring that participants would apply the lessons learnt, to adapt to the prevailing economic realities after retirement.
